How It Started

Verdict

The open-source strategy was sound — Apache-2.0 on the main platform lets developers build on the codebase and builds trust. The tech stack (Next.js + Prisma + tRPC) was standard TypeScript full-stack for the era, no exotic architecture, good maintainability.
The challenge: for this kind of content platform, the core asset is content and community, not code. As image generation tools (Midjourney, DALL-E) move toward more closed commercial models, how much space remains for the open diffusion ecosystem — and how it stays sustainable — is the structural question this platform faces long-term.
The a16z investment and creator economy mechanisms show the team is actively exploring the path from “free sharing” to “sustainable monetization.” Whether that path fully opens up — 2026 still doesn’t have a clear answer.
