ZJU pengsida: A 14.7K-Star PhD Research Experience Guide, Open-Sourced

A research experience document that started as internal lab notes at Zhejiang University — now at 14,700 stars.

pengsida is a researcher at ZJU’s zju3dv lab with multiple CVPR/ICCV oral papers: Deep Snake, Neural Body, PVNet, Animatable NeRF. learning_research was originally written for his own lab students; after opening it up, it became one of the most-referenced entry guides in the Chinese CV research community.

Five Core PhD Skills

1. Finding important problems Not “find an unsolved problem” but “find a problem worth solving.” The hardest step and the sharpest differentiator between research quality. The guide walks through literature review to problem framing.

2. Proposing solutions After understanding the problem’s boundaries: how to design a method. Covers building intuition, ablation design, and converting “this might work” into testable hypotheses.

3. Running experiments Not just “make it run” — designing effective experiments, diagnosing failures quickly, setting up controls, and maintaining experiment logs.

4. Writing papers Introduction structure, Related Work scoping, figure/table design. Includes writing templates and anti-patterns for each section. Rebuttal guidance for papers under review.

5. Giving talks Different emphases for posters, orals, and rebuttals.

Who It’s For

  • CV graduate students new to a lab who need a systematic view of the research process
  • Researchers with a few projects but a high rejection rate who can’t diagnose where things go wrong
  • Anyone curious how authors of CVPR/ICCV oral papers think about the research workflow
