Weight-Space Programming and Knowledge Editing
11 月 2 日,Rikiya Takehi、Jayden Teoh、Alex Zhang 与 Omar Khattab 发布《Sparks of Weight-Space Programming》。

exp8_math/runs/p50c/edit/manifest.json 指向第 15、19 层两个 mlp.down_proj.weight,形状都是 1024 × 3584。
W_new = W_old - 6 × outer(u, mask64 × (u @ W_old))
| Weight-Space Programming |

{
"base_revision": "immutable-checkpoint-id",
"edit_id": "atlas-warranty-v2",
"source": "approved-product-catalog-v2",
"valid_from": "2026-11-03",
"method": "selected-editor-and-config",
"patch_sha256": "computed-after-freeze",
"evaluation": "held-out-report-id",
"rollback": "previous-deployment-id"
}
截断的 andyhuo520/vibe-knowledge…
https://github.com/andyhuo520/vibe-knowledge

Knowledge editing asks how to change a particular fact or behavior while preserving the rest of a model. Weight-Space Programming brings a new angle to this established research area. A small parameter update, the absence of gradient training, and a reliable new capability are separate claims, each requiring its own evidence.
This review uses primary materials available on November 3, 2026. Its independent checks cover source code and released experiment artifacts. It does not claim an independent full-model benchmark run.
What did Weight-Space Programming demonstrate?
The November 2 post by Rikiya Takehi, Jayden Teoh, Alex Zhang, and Omar Khattab studies a general-purpose frontier model reading and modifying neural-network weights. Small-network recognition experiments differ from the Qwen experiment, which provides Python access, practice problems, and forward feedback. Fifty forward requests can contain batches, rather than just fifty generated answers.
The authors report Qwen3.5-0.8B improving from 7.9% to 48.1% on MATH-500, while token-limit hits fall from 93.0% to 33.1%. The intervention primarily removes repetitive thinking. Their follow-up on Gemma 3 270M, which rarely loops, establishes no comparable mathematical gain. Removing an obstacle to expressing an existing ability is different from acquiring a missing ability.
Original: https://rikiyat.github.io/blog/weight-space-programming/

Reaggregating the released correctness flags gives 158 and 962 correct samples out of 2,000 per model, matching 7.9% and 48.1%. This checks the published accounting, not answer validity or newly generated outputs.
The evaluation uses thinking mode, a 32,768-token output limit, and four samples per MATH-500 question. Averaging sample accuracy is not pass@4. Qwen’s own model card warns about looping. A stronger next comparison would include recommended base-model settings, non-thinking mode, decoding interventions, matched output budgets, and conventional adaptation baselines. Report completion, accuracy, tokens, latency, and editing expense separately.
Base-model documentation: https://huggingface.co/Qwen/Qwen3.5-0.8B
The released edited-model card describes a further run by akhaliq / ML Intern: 51.0% over 500 questions with four samples each. Its base-model smoke test contains only 25 questions, so this is not a complete equal-size comparison of both models. Those are published results, not measurements performed for this article.
Checkpoint and evaluation details: https://huggingface.co/RikiyaT/Qwen3.5-0.8B-weight-space-programming
What does the released patch contain?
The source audit pins RikiyaT/lm_understand-logs to 4d09ba6d6a7e891dd8063974dfe81b3d78e3494f. The final patch manifest names two mlp.down_proj.weight tensors, in layers 15 and 19, both shaped 1024 × 3584. The run’s own report gives this operation:
W_new = W_old - 6 × outer(u, mask64 × (u @ W_old))
For each matrix, a mask selects 64 columns. The intervention targets a repetition direction, rather than inserting a mathematical fact. With a unit direction and exact arithmetic, subtracting six times the directional component changes that component from a to -5a in the selected columns. Calling this merely an orthogonal projection would be misleading.
The addressed footprint is 131,072 entries. The manifest counts 130,188 actual bfloat16 bit changes after rounding: 65,260 plus 64,928. Addressed positions and changed bits are distinct measurements. The quoted 0.016% uses the rounded 0.8-billion model size; comparisons should identify whether their denominator includes the vision tower, language model, or non-embedding weights.
The two matrices have relative changes of approximately 10.64% and 8.11%. A tiny share of all parameters does not imply a tiny intervention within the selected component.
The reconstruction script checks base-tensor SHA-256 values, applies the patch, and verifies the resulting hashes. This article inspected the implementation, manifest, patch indices, and published score files. It did not download the complete base checkpoint, verify its tensor hashes, or rerun generation.
Experiment 8’s README reports 158 turns, 80 Python runs, four conversations, and 20.3 hours of wall-clock time for the 50-request run. This includes forward inference and about 4.7 hours waiting for an unavailable service. It is neither pure compute time nor an instantaneous repair. The final patch footprint is not the cost of discovering it.
Logs and artifacts: https://github.com/RikiyaT/lm_understand-logs
Scripts use MIT; logs, data, and networks use CC BY 4.0, with separate third-party terms. The release is a research package, not an assumed complete hosted platform. Experiment 8 documents missing harness and evaluation components.
Where does knowledge editing fit?
Model editing predates this release. ROME is an important milestone, rather than the unique origin of the entire field: the MEND preprint was already available in 2021. Narrow knowledge editing concerns factual associations. Broader model editing also covers behavior, preferences, refusal, or repetition. Their evaluation requirements overlap but are not interchangeable.
| Approach | Mechanism | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional fine-tuning | Optimize parameters on task data | Data, optimization, and regression costs remain |
| ROME / MEMIT | Locate MLP components and construct constrained updates | Requires representations, statistics, and architecture adaptation |
| MEND | Learn an editor that transforms gradients | The editor itself requires training |
| SERAC | Store edits and route relevant queries to a counterfactual model | Scope prediction and retrieval introduce failure modes |
| RAG / context updates | Supply current evidence without changing base weights | Retrieval and faithful evidence use must work |
| Weight-Space Programming | A general model analyzes and proposes weight interventions | Frontier-model calls and feedback search are real costs |
These are alternatives to compare against a concrete need. Frequently changing, permission-dependent facts often belong in a database or retrieval layer. Parameter editing becomes more attractive when the required change is specifically in a fixed base model’s behavior.
Why does ROME matter?
ROME, Rank-One Model Editing, appeared at NeurIPS 2022. It studies factual associations through causal tracing and applies a rank-one update to a selected MLP module. A simplified picture treats Wk as a mapping from an input representation to a value. An edit should change one target mapping while minimizing disturbance to others. The actual constraint uses background activation statistics; a fact is not a literal string stored in one addressable cell.
Project: https://rome.baulab.info/
Code: https://github.com/kmeng01/rome
The audited official implementation, commit 0874014cd9837e4365f3e6f3c71400ef11509e04, optimizes a differentiable delta in compute_v.py with Adam and loss.backward(), while freezing the base parameters during that phase. rome_main.py subsequently writes an outer-product update into the selected weight matrix. Avoiding full-model retraining does not make the entire procedure gradient-free. The code is MIT; model and dataset terms remain separate.
Low rank does not mean sparse
An outer product can modify every matrix entry even though only two vectors describe it. Sparse updates instead have many zero entries. LoRA also uses low-rank representations, but usually learns adapters from task data; sharing a matrix factorization does not make it equivalent to ROME.
A reproducible four-dimensional linear demonstration included with this article changes all 16 matrix entries using a rank-one patch. It exactly changes the intended input, also changes a correlated input, and preserves an orthogonal control. This verifies the algebra only, not language-model fact localization. A small patch representation is not a guarantee of small semantic side effects.

Beyond a single edit
MEMIT spreads updates across multiple relevant layers and studies thousands of simultaneous factual changes. Batch editing is different from indefinitely appending updates to the same deployed model.
Project and implementation: https://memit.baulab.info/ · https://github.com/kmeng01/memit
MEND learns small networks that transform gradients into targeted updates. Its fast edit application must be considered together with editor training and adaptation requirements.
Paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/2110.11309
SERAC keeps explicit edit memory and learns when counterfactual predictions should apply. It demonstrates that precise scope control can be as important as overwriting base parameters.
Paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/2206.06520
AlphaEdit projects updates into the null space of preserved knowledge representations. This reduces interference under its assumptions; it is not a universal proof that every future input remains unchanged. Sequential updates still need regression measurement.
Paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/2410.02355
Code: https://github.com/jianghoucheng/AlphaEdit
EasyEdit provides a common starting point for comparing editing methods and evaluations. Its MIT license does not override model licenses, and an algorithm listing is not a promise that every new architecture or quantization format works unchanged. Older GPT-J settings cannot simply be assumed compatible with Qwen3.5’s hybrid architecture.
Framework: https://github.com/zjunlp/EasyEdit
What should a successful edit preserve or change?
A correct answer to the editing prompt is only the first check. Test paraphrases, aliases, languages, related implications, and unrelated facts. Related knowledge should change only when the relationship logically requires it: changing a person’s employer does not necessarily change their home address.
RippleEdits studies this consistency problem through approximately 5,000 factual edits. Existing methods in its experiments struggled with the required implications; a simple in-context baseline performed strongly. This is evidence about a particular benchmark, not a universal ordering of retrieval and parameter-editing systems.
Paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.12976
Code and data: https://github.com/edenbiran/RippleEdits
BAKE adds reverse-direction evaluation. Knowing an edited forward relation does not guarantee the corresponding reverse answer. The test must respect cardinality: one manufacturer can make many products.
Paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/2310.10322
Finally, resetting to the original model after every test measures single-edit quality. Applying a hundred edits to the same model measures cumulative behavior. Products that update over time need the latter, including retention of earlier edits and resolution of conflicting updates.
How should an engineering experiment be organized?
Choose a falsifiable target, such as updating a fictional product’s warranty with an effective date while preserving the other products. A fictional catalog avoids embedding real customer records in downloadable weights.
- Pin the checkpoint, tokenizer, template, precision, backend, and decoding configuration. Keep an untouched copy. A floating-point patch does not directly specify how to modify packed quantization bytes.
- Compare the base, context or retrieval overrides, and a selected editor under the same questions and scoring. Add decoding controls for a repetition intervention.
- Separate editing, hyperparameter selection, and final held-out evaluation. Freeze the patch before the final test; preserve unsuccessful attempts as well.
- Test direct success, paraphrases, aliases, languages, reverse relations, multi-hop consequences, relevant unchanged facts, and unrelated tasks.
- Test repeated updates to one entity, expired facts, similar names, conflicting facts, and retention through a sequence of edits.
- Bind patches to base hashes, record sources and validity dates, and deploy behind regression checks and rollback. A production agent should not overwrite its serving weights without a controlled release process.

A release record should identify the immutable base revision, edit identifier, approved source, effective date, editor configuration, frozen patch hash, held-out report, and previous deployment. This is a suggested record structure, not an existing repository API.
Report target success, generalization, locality, related consistency, earlier-edit retention, time, memory, and inference cost separately. An unchanged wrong answer is stable, not correct. Likewise, making private information inaccessible under one prompt does not establish certified deletion from every parameter pathway.
What is new, and what remains unproven?
Weight modification is established research. A general model participating in diagnosis, hypothesis formation, intervention code, feedback interpretation, and patch selection is a distinct contribution worth studying. Existing knowledge-editing literature neither automatically validates nor automatically dismisses that workflow.
The important next questions are transfer to other models, stability across seeds, improvements without a looping defect, cumulative consistency, and end-to-end cost including frontier-model calls. A demonstrated local repair does not establish a general replacement for training.
The user’s truncated link resolves to https://github.com/andyhuo520/vibe-knowledge . It is an MIT-licensed Claude Code skill for sourced explainer videos, including scripting, narration, rendering, and quality checks. It is not a knowledge-editing implementation or the original research repository. It was read but not installed or executed. Research implementations and media-production tools should be kept distinct.
FAQ
Does knowledge editing require no training?
There is no single rule. Some methods optimize representations, some train editors, and some maintain external memory. Avoiding full base-model retraining does not eliminate learning or computation.
Does changing 0.016% of parameters preserve everything else?
No. Parameter footprint is different from behavioral scope. Test unrelated abilities, associated knowledge, reformulations, and cumulative edits.
Should a developer start with editing or RAG?
For changing facts that need citations or access control, begin with a database or retrieval baseline. Compare parameter editing when access to weights and a strong regression process are available, and when changing the base behavior is itself the objective.
